Scuba diving is one of those ‘easy to get into’, but harder to get out of hobbies. Every trip is an adventure and every dive is different. Once you’ve tried scuba diving every holiday you take will involve a dive somehow. Phuket is a conveniently located hub for scuba divers seeking dive sites that are listed in the Top 10 globally.
Chalong Bay is the main centre of water activities for Phuket and is located close to nearby islands suitable for diving. The limestone island of Koh Doi Mai climbs dramatically from the ocean. The reefs are healthy with an abundance of Leopard sharks, turtles, moray eels and stingrays. The islands of Phi Phi are also within a reachable distance for divers just seeking a day trip. The infamous Similan and Surin islands located north of Phuket are best dived from a live aboard. The large number of sites and their diversity warrant at least a 3 day excursion, especially if you want to include ‘Richelieu Rock’, the most famous dive site in Thailand.
The ideal time to dive is between October and May when the monsoon winds and rains have subsided.
Phuket has become the sailing mecca for Thailand and much of South East Asia. Several internationally recognised regatta’s and races are held here. The ‘Kings Cup’ regatta and the Phuket international Boat show are just a few to mention. The presence of yacht enthusiasts from across the globe has given Chalong an intrinsically cosmopolitan feel. The Ao Chalong yacht club provides sheltered anchorage which is popular with visiting sailors.
Chalong’s location makes it a perfect starting point to cruise the spectacular Phang Nga Bay. The diversity of yachts available to cater for your cruise is astounding. Everything from traditional Chinese ‘Junks’ to Hobbie Cats and Lasers can be chartered.
